SUMMER AND TEXTURED HAIR: YOUR GUIDE TO A BEAUTIFUL SEASON WITHOUT SACRIFICE

Summer and textured hair: your guide to a beautiful season without sacrifice

We love summer. But we’re not quite so keen on our wavy, curly, coily and afro hair in summer. Sun, humidity, salt and chlorine can quickly leave textured hair drier, more brittle and less defined.

The good news? A few simple routines can help prepare your hair to keep your curls looking beautiful all season long.

Why does textured hair become drier in summer?

Textured hair is naturally more prone to dehydration. Its ‘S’ or ‘Z’ shape prevents sebum from flowing naturally from the roots to the ends, meaning it does not hydrate the entire length of the hair.

In summer, several factors exacerbate this phenomenon:

  • sunlight (UV rays),
  • salt water from the sea,
  • chlorine from swimming pools,
  • and more frequent washing.

Essential summer care tips

Trim the damaged ends

A trim before the holidays is one of the best ways to look after your hair in the summer. Damaged ends break more easily and tangle more. Trimming a few centimetres helps to:

  • reduce breakage along the length,
  • restore bounce and lightness to curls,
  • make styling easier during the summer.

Even just a few centimetres can make a real difference.

Adjust your hair care routine

In summer, your hair is exposed to new external factors: sunscreen, sand, salt, chlorine and pollution. These residues build up on your hair strands and can prevent your hydrating products from penetrating properly.

The solution? A simple but essential step for everyone: clarifying.

For a natural alternative: mix 4 tablespoons of green clay or rhassoul with 3 tablespoons of warm water until you have a smooth paste. Apply it to your curls and leave it on for 2 to 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly and following up with your usual hydrating shampoo and conditioner.

Next, choose your moisturiser based on your hair type:

  • For wavy and curly hair: Opt for lightweight formulas (lightweight creams or hydrating gels) to define the curls without weighing them down.
  • For coily and afro hair, opt for richer textures.
  • The final touch to add shine to your curls with dry oil.

Get into good habits during the holidays

A few simple habits can effectively protect textured hair throughout the summer:

  • Soak your hair in fresh water before going to the sea or the swimming pool: by wetting it beforehand, your hair will absorb less salt water or chlorinated water.
  • Rinse thoroughly after every swim, without waiting until the evening.
  • Avoid heat styling tools as much as possible.
  • Protect your hair from the sun with a scarf, a hat or a hair sun spray.
  • Sleep with a satin cover (a bonnet or pillowcase) to prevent friction and retain moisture.

At COHEA, we provide advice and routines tailored to the specific needs of every hair type (wavy, curly, coily and afro hair).
