SCALP: HAIR LOSS, DANDRUFF OR ITCHING. HOW TO TREAT IT?

When we talk about hair care routines for wavy, curly, coily and afro hair, we often think about hydration, definition or styling.

But we forget the most important thing: the scalp. A healthy scalp is essential for stimulating growth, limiting hair loss and maintaining strong, shiny curls.

Understanding how it works allows you to take the right steps and optimise the health of your hair fibre.

What is the scalp and how does it work?

The scalp is an extension of the skin on your face. And just like your face, it can be dry, sensitive, oily or prone to itching.

It consists of three layers:

  • The epidermis: protective layer.
  • The dermis: layer containing hair follicles (hair roots) and sebaceous glands (secrete sebum)
  • The hypodermis: subcutaneous layer containing hair bulbs and fat.

An unbalanced scalp can lead to:

  • hair loss,
  • slowed growth,
  • dandruff,
  • oily roots,
  • itching.

Why is the scalp even more important for textured hair?

Due to the « S » or « Z » shape of wavy, curly, coily and afro hair, its structure prevents sebum from being distributed along the hair fibre.

The result: lengths that lack hydration, an overloaded scalp leading to build-up at the root and an imbalance in the scalp.

Signs that your scalp needs attention

  • Frequent itching,
  • Tightness,
  • Loss of volume at the roots,
  • Excess sebum or dandruff,
  • Hair growth that seems to have stalled.

Taking care of your scalp

A few simple steps to promote a balanced scalp:

  • Care: specific care tailored to your needs
  • Massage: stimulates blood microcirculation to boost growth
  • Cleansing: it is essential to use a shampoo that is suited to your specific needs. A deeper cleanse (clarifying or detox treatment, every 6 to 8 weeks) to restore your hair to a healthy state.
