Ah, the holidays… The sun, the sea, endless swimming, long walks with your hair blowing in the wind. You come back with a light spirit, but often with hair in distress! Dryness, breakage, oxidised colour, irritated scalp…
Wavy, curly, coily and afro hair needs a real post-summer rescue plan. Here’s a simple, effective routine to restore strength, shine and suppleness to your curls.
Assess the condition of your hair
When you return, take the time to assess the condition of your hair:
- Is it rough, dull or brittle?
- Is your scalp dry or irritated?
- Are the ends split or more fragile than usual?
These signs indicate that your hair is lacking in moisture and may have been subjected to chemical (chlorine, salt) or mechanical aggression (towel friction, too-tight hairstyles, etc.).
Detoxify your scalp and lengths
Start with a gentle scalp scrub or clarifying shampoo, but without harsh sulphates. The aim is to remove residues of sun cream, salt, sand, sweat and chlorine while stimulating microcirculation.
The COHEA team’s advice: opt for treatments based on soft clay, activated charcoal or purifying essential oils such as peppermint or tea tree.
Use the right treatment
Once the scalp and length have been detoxified, it’s time to start treating your wavy, curly, coily and afro hair.
Use a gentle shampoo (a second shampoo), then apply
- a hydrating and repairing mask, rich in active ingredients such as Aloe vera, vegetable glycerine or honey to deeply moisturise if you’ve worn your hair in its natural state.
OR
- a protein or nourishing treatment based, for example, on plant proteins (wheat, silk, rice) to fill in gaps in damaged, bleached or colour-treated hair, or if you’ve been wearing braids with or without extensions all summer (we’ve written a whole article on the subject).
Let it sit under a shower cap or heated bonnet to maximise absorption. Follow the time indicated on the product instructions.
Repeat this step 2 or 3 times in the month following your holiday.
Plan a visit to the hairdresser
After the summer, we recommend trimming damaged ends. The sun, salt, chlorine and friction can weaken the hair fibre, especially at the ends.
Keeping split or brittle ends prevents healthy hair growth, as the split ends gradually work their way up the hair shaft. A slight trim, even just a few millimeters, can make all the difference to start fresh with a healthy base, restore bounce to your curls, and prevent further breakage.
It’s a step that’s often overlooked, but it’s essential if you want to keep your hair strong and in great shape.
